The Shanghai in this photo bears no resemblance to the city I've visited twice: first in the mid-1990s and then in 2000.
All that stuff in the photo was being built last time we were there. I remember saying to my husband that the city should have provided hard hats at the airport because the city was one big construction zone. I'm glad I got to see the city before it was "modernized." Not saying this is a worse version; just different.
Ditto for Beijing, which looked completely different the second time we were there. Much of the city was leveled to create a more modern landscape in time to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the People's Republic.
