Old Stock Ale from North Coast Brewing Co.
Rating: A
2007 edition
Received in a trade from barleywinebrewer.
Appearance: Effervescently carbonated, smallish khaki head on top of a garnet/leather body. Good retention. Lacing limited by alcohol?
Smell: Caramel and dark fruits, aroma reminiscent almost of a Belgian dark ale's malt profile, but without the distinctive Belgian yeast. Hint of biscuit/toast also reveals itself - attractive aroma, with just a hint of underlying alcohol.
Taste: Wow, very good. Sweetness of dark fruits (raisin flavours are balanced by hop bitterness), caramel at the swallow. Aftertaste is a New Belgium-esque biscuit. Complex, layered, delicious. Would not have guessed 11.7% alcohol.
Mouthfeel: Medium bodied, smooth but carbonation seems a little excessive for this style and alcohol content.
Drinkability: Very good, sole limitation is the alcohol.
Serving type: bottle
